Like many good businesses, this one began by solving a problem.My wife and a friend decided to grow 5,000 heirloom vegetable plants from seeds and needed a greenhouse to raise them in.Because of my background in building, I was put in charge of that task.
My search started with the traditional greenhouse supply companies.The cost for purchasing a frame kit was ridiculous.Furthermore, the units had to be shipped freight.The cost, in dollars and aggravation, was higher than I wanted to pay.
The next step was to look at the “home-brew” way of getting it done.What I found was a bunch of very hard work, trying to find a truck full of old windows or patio doors for cheap, or some convoluted use of pvc pipe.I decided that if I was going to go to the effort of building a greenhouse, it was going to be done right.
This led me to the realization that there was a market for high quality, reasonably priced greenhouses.I took the plunge, purchased the materials and equipment, and began manufacturing greenhouse frames from my farm shop. The result has been very rewarding.The greenhouse business is growing and we get to work with and meet intelligent, interesting and independent people.
Our family is still on the journey to becoming self-sufficient.With each new skill learned we bask in the sense of accomplishment and peace that comes from our connection with the land, animals and being able to provide for ourselves. Homesteading can be challenging, there is a steep learning curve for most of us.We started Homestead Essentials to share with others the best products we have found.They sure do help increase our odds of success and smooth out some of the challenges.
The philosophy that we strive to take with Homestead Essentials is the same that I take on my own behalf:A very high quality product that is 80-90% as nice as the best, at about 50% of the price.The product must also be simple to operate, not loaded with features that will cause failures and easy to maintain.It must also be durable and repairable, if possible.
